CONVENTION Q&A:
What is the purpose of our Triennial Convention?
Unions are voluntary organizations. We can only be effective if the membership knows the union truly belongs to them. This means a union which reflects the goals of its membership. As such, the purpose of our Triennial Convention is to ensure that our membership has the opportunity to outline these goals by way of putting forward resolutions and by-laws which provide direction to and govern our Local Union.
What is a resolution?
A resolution is a written proposal and brought before our Convention. A resolution that has been passed by our Convention then becomes a part of the ongoing business of our Local Union.
• All resolutions must be submitted to the Local Recording Secretary
• Resolutions are to be submitted one at a time on separate sheets.
Who may be an elected delegate?
Our Local will be represented by delegates from the following delegation territories:
Alberta – 2 delegates
BC – 2 delegates
Saskatchewan – 2 delegates
Maritimes – 2 delegates
Ontario – 9 delegates
Quebec – 3 delegates
In order to stand for election, a member must be in good standing and must have been nominated by at least three (3) members in good standing.
What are the responsibilities of an elected delegate?
Our Triennial Convention is of tremendous importance as our members are have the direct opportunity to participate in the business of and give direction to our Local. With the number of changes and challenges facing our Local union at this time, our Convention is as important as ever.
• Each delegate shall have one vote per resolution
• Due to financial restraints, delegates to the convention including elected members will be volunteering their time on the weekend of the convention
• Travel expenses and paid time off for all regular work days will be covered by the Local.
