2012 OFL (Ontario Federation of Labour) convention
Last Updated on Friday, 21 October 2011 02:16 Written by President Friday, 21 October 2011 02:16
Even with the number of issues that face our local union, it is imperative that we make the most of the opportunity to affect social change and tackle the issues that affect our communities and society as a whole. One of the best ways we can do this is to have our voices heard and be involved in the greater overall labour movement.
Members of our Local Union Executive Board have been active in the past but it’s time for us to share what we’ve learned and act together to take our involvement to the next level.
Earlier this morning, members of the CAW Local 2000 Political Action Committee met with Sid Ryan and members of the OFL Unity Team together with other leaders from the CAW National office including CAW National President Ken Lewenza and Jenny Ahn, CAW Dir. Membership Mobilization & Political Action.
The reason for this meeting was to prepare our delegates for the upcoming OFL convention which is being held next month. The message that we heard from Sid Ryan and the rest of the Unity Team was somewhat disconcerting: There has been some degree of divisiveness, distraction and ugliness in the recent past within the OFL. With that said however, a motion was put forward and passed by the CAW to pledge our support for brother Ryan and the rest of the Unity Team at the upcoming OFL convention.
What does this mean for us?
The OFL has a tremendous capability as a vehicle for progressive social action and change at all levels. For example, the OFL has led campaigns protecting and growing pension benefits for ALL Canadians and championing the sort of economic policies that benefit for everyone.
As a proud member of the OFL, CAW Local 2000 sees the clear value in supporting strong leaders within the OFL Executive Board who can work together towards achieving these goals. It is our belief that when the smoke clears, our Local union will be further aligned with the leadership of the OFL in order to work together towards the kind of change that benefits working families.
In Solidarity,
