Letter from Jack Layton

I trust that by now, many of our Brothers and Sisters would be aware that earlier this morning, Canada’s Official Opposition leader, Jack Layton, passed away after a battle with prostate cancer.
Realizing that our membership may encompass a wide range of thoughts on the political issues of our time, it’s important to recognize Mr. Layton’s contributions to our country. Regardless of whether we agree or disagree issue for issue, Mr. Layton was a dedicated public servant, representing working people to the fullest extent of his abilities.
Our contributions in the workplace and our work as a union are about providing for our families and making better lives for ourselves – not simply about “making money”. Raising the standards for all Canadians – including the working class – is what our union is all about. These same goals defined Mr. Layton’s working career in politics. He was a strong ally and a good friend to the labour movement and indeed, to all of Canada.
It’s moments like this that remind us that as a union, we have a unique opportunity to make our voices heard. Regardless of our individual political affiliations, there is much we can do to make our Local more socially and politically involved to represent the interests of our members. If nothing else, the historic outcome of the past federal election cycle shows us that anything is possible and that nothing should be taken for granted.
Before he passed, Mr. Layton wrote an open letter to Canadians. I hope that you will take a moment to read it and take away some measure of inspiration.
